I am particularly interested in imagery that springs from the unconscious mind. I pay close attention to my use of metaphors, noticing when the found objects that I am drawn to, correspond to objects and pictures made by people across cultures, particularly those known as “outsider artists”. Although a student of comparative religion, my interest is less about religious doctrine, as it is storytelling.
My staircases and ladders are a visual representation of the effort it takes to rise above negative entanglements and to transition from the worldly to a life with fewer negative emotional or materials attachments. This essentially Buddhist view is an expression of the idea that suffering is a result of clinging, not only to things (which inevitably break or wear out) or ideologies, but also to relationships. The Immigrant images as well as broken, cut up, dysfunctional and extremely fragile domestic objects are frequent subjects as metaphors for illness, displacement and eviction.
